ASB Meeting for Oct 4th 07

ASB Meeting Minutes – October 4, 2007

• Bruce the librarian will have the boxes in the library moved by Dec. 15! Faculty has gone through 1/3 of them. Can we move the sculptures by the window? Talk to the art department.
• Albert Chen needs some students for a paid job. Work with his friends that made the show Burn Notice (which Barb says is funny). Talk to Albert! achen@cogswell.edu
• Macs in the Shrine have problems printing – Evan Peebles is aware of this and is working on it. They need a certain driver and should be good to go in a week.
• Teachers are losing class time because the copiers keep going down. Chet will talk to the Dean because faculty should be taking care of their class work before class. Any printer issues need to be brought up with Andrey. Also, there are 4 copiers readily available on campus – this shouldn’t be happening.
• Students suggest taking down the Lair exhibit because the game isn’t a good one, though the art is. The exhibit will be down soon – Susan was waiting on high schooler visits.
• Big announcement – DMP DEGREE DISCONTINUED. This is due to the loss of Lexi Leban. Current DMP students will continue to have their classes and will graduate but no new DMP students. DMP classes that are mandatory for students of other disciplines will remain (video editing, compositing, etc.). This is not a cost cutting matter – this is about putting resources into the places that will help Cogswell excel (like hiring full-time faculty members such as Albert and Hadi). Also trying to keep new animation guy Michael on – maybe make him full time. Most schools don’t have a good, full time game design or animation faculty members – we are fortunate! Where DMP video equipment will end up is still being determined.
• Can we get advanced web classes? No, too common/competitive to put resources into. You can take the classes at most CC’s around here.
• Rebecca’s website updates – anyone with suggestions can email her rfortelka@cogswell.edu There is also the Web Design Club which most people are doing through a Google group – again, email her if interested. And she needs some help with the forums – they are simple machine forums.
• ASB OFFICE HOURS – the ASB needs people to work the office on Tuesdays and weekdays before noon. There’s a TV, DVD player and a new awesome stereo in there. You can chill out, hang out and/or do homework. It’s fun! Talk to Andrew if you are interested. ajennings@cogswell.edu
• Andrew is ordering art supplies! Going to cost roughly $200 and is coming out of the ASB budget for that sort of thing. If you have art supply suggestions, email Andrew: ajennings@cogswell.edu
• If you need to get into ASB, talk to Rob just down the hall. We’re still waiting on keys while Marvin is away on vacation.
• ASB t-shirts are ordered and will be here this week or next.
• PRESENT A BROWN BAG LUNCH!!! You can give a 20-30 minute talk on anything – something related to your degree program here or simply your passion in life. We will be picking someone in 2 weeks. The presentation will be in the Spring. Submit a proposal at one of the next 2 ASB meetings. If you have questions, contact Kathy Williams – kwilliams@cogswell.edu
• Studio 15 is doing a Hot Six board game night on Oct. 19th at 6 pm. There will be a company, Table Star Games, there looking for students for internships. Andrew bought Risk – Chet should be happy. Bring your own board games! We’ll have a few but more is always fun.
• ASB BBQ NEEDS TO BE CLEANED. Marissa, Sarah and Amy spent 4 hours cleaning the nasty thing. YOU NEED TO CLEAN THE BBQ AND/OR THE POPCORN MACHINE IF YOU USE IT. The ASB proposed a new rule: if you use the BBQ or the popcorn machine and don’t clean it, you will lose the privilege to use the BBQ & popcorn machine for a whole semester. It passes!! Rob will make a cleaning guide. Hopefully with pictures for those who are more visually inclined.
• Music Producer’s Club is making a CD of CPC student work! Send your .wav or .aiff file to Tony tdias@cogswell.edu They are also having Reason classes starting Oct. 20th and going for 6 classes. On Nov. 8-10, Tony is going to Remix Hotel with other DJs and producers – it’s like a convention and very cool. Wanna go? Talk to Tony.
• Console Game Night is Nov. 17th!!! It’s an overnighter and we will be playing Halo 3 and Guitar Hero 3 among many many others. Bring your games and consoles and let’s do some hard core gaming!!!!!!! (Rachael is very excited about this…..she’s ready to pwn sum n00bs @ halo3). :D
• Japanese Swordsmans Club meets Mondays and Wednesday at 6 pm.
• People would like a place to store their sculptures, giant drawing pads, etc. so they can bike to school. This topic was tabled for later.
• Recycle bins are coming! Paper ones are already there and glass/plastic ones are coming. Recycle bin logo contest is going on now! Make a logo to go on the recycling bins!! Winner wins the 300 DVD. Bring your ideas in to the next ASB meeting! The topic of having Stephan recycling the bottles and cans and taking 75% of the profit has been tabled.

ASB Meeting for Oct 18th 07

ASB Meeting Notes 10/18/07

- Recycling: tabled because Stephen isn’t here
- 24 hour access petition has been created and is being signed as we speak
o We are looking to get around 100 signatures
o Andrew will then present the proposal to Chet
o If administration does not respond to the petition, there is talk of doing a sit-in
o Will cost school extra money in terms of electricity, but not personnel
 Some rooms have motion-sensor lights, but not all, and we’re not sure if there are plans to get more
 There is currently no auto shutdown for computers either
o Some people are interested in dropping the signature runaround
o Freshmen don’t have extended access
 Some classes like video editing are generally taken by freshmen but require a lot of outside homework that must be done specifically on a Mac in FinalCut which most people don’t have
o Ask hours to be posted on the door
- Halloween Party
o Dan is using the Dragon’s Den until 5 pm
o Write a set-up task list and figure out how many people we need to do it in 3 hours
o In the future… if anyone ever wants to schedule an event in the Dragon’s Den, ask Lucy for a reservation
- Paintball
o It’s happening on Saturday, November 10th
o At Bay Area Paintball in Burlingame
o Still getting exact pricing
- Presidential Elections
o At the ASB All Student Meeting people were interested in electing new officers before the next official election
o Most people at this meeting are interested in this as well
o Some people would prefer to wait because of the timing, and also because Rob and Rachael are more accountable than students
 If the people who run for president aren’t reliable and not many people vote, we can move to refrain from electing officers
- Eric has a proposal…
o Funds request in the amount of $500 for an Xbox 360 and TorqueX
o Allow for small groups to create games for Xbox led by Albert Chen
o Students working on these games would be under direct supervision of Albert Chen
o Goal to make games by 2008
o ASB can be updated on a month-to-month basis on the team’s progress
o This request has been made to administration, but administration does not have the funds to support it
o This a necessary step for students so we can create proof of concepts, funnel our games online, and get Cogswell more recognized in the industry
o Can be helpful to all students – as all disciplines of Cogswell are required in order to make a game (engineering, audio, modeling, animation…)
o Revenue from the games may be an issue because ASB money is created by fees taken from all students, and if only a select few students are making revenue from projects created using software purchased using ASB funds
o Xbox will be kept either in Albert’s office or possibly in the ASB Office
o Eric will talk to Rejino or Chet about the details of Non-Profit
o There will be a vote on this proposal next week and those who feel strongly about it should attend the meeting next week
o UPDATE: Eric has informed me that they have obtained funds for this project from other sources. Therefore ASB will not need to contribute funds for this project to move forward. We can still discuss the project at the next meeting should ASB so desire. ---Rob
- At the top of the agenda for next week’s meeting will be a fund request from the Web Design Club – see Rebecca Fortelka for details.
