o Submissions are due by 3/31

· The ASB Presidential debate was held between Andrew Jennings and Rebecca Fortelka – Rob Chaitin moderated

o Rachael asked what the candidates had planned for summer

§ Rebecca wanted to inspire greater student involvement, hold a few awesome activities and talk to students about improving the ASB

§ Andrew wanted to go see Ironman, to work with GDC on some of their facilities requests, to convert the TV lounge into a high quality movie screening room and to work with Evan on repainting some of the audio room.

o Tobias asked if the candidates would prefer the ASB budget be spent on a large number of small scale events or a small number of large scale events

§ Rebecca felt that a smaller number of large events was better but added that she would like to see some afternoon events as well as the usual evening ones

§ Andrew agreed that larger events were better and added that he wanted to see more opportunities for clubs to fundraise. He also said that he is in the process of planning a very large event for next year and that, in general, he’d rather see some of the event budget cut back in favor of school improvements

o Rachael asked if either candidate planned to paint over the wall outside room 197

§ Andrew said no

§ Rebecca said no, that painting murals on white walls were the priority

o Tyler asked if the candidates had any plans to replace the job wall

§ Andrew felt this was more of an issue for the Career Office

§ Rebecca had no opinion

o Steve asked how the candidates planned to raise public awareness of Cogswell

§ Rebecca said she would work with the recruitment staff and try to reach out to prospective students. She added that she recently had the opportunity to return to her High School with Barb and participate in recruiting efforts there.

§ Andrew said that it was all students’ responsibility to raise Cogswell’s profile. He went on to say that he currently worked as an ambassador. He said that students should take it upon themselves to talk to people from outside of the Cogswell community about our school and that they should also talk to Barb about websites they frequent or publications they read so that advertising can be better targeted.

o Tobias asked what would each candidate do different than their opponent

§ Rebecca said that this was a very difficult question but that she felt she would be able to expose students to different parts of campus life than they were used to or than were specific to their majors, and that she would promote activities and events.

§ Andrew felt that the biggest campus issue is student involvement and that he would improve this by getting students involved in school improvements. He cited his work on the ASB Office as a successful example of this.

o Steve asked the candidates opinion of Cogswell’s “adult themed” logo, and if they planned to do anything about it

§ Andrew said that while he doesn’t like the logo, it cannot be changed and that he would rather be proactive in designing an ASB logo that could be used for ASB clothing, etc, than to complain about the school logo over which he has no control.

§ Rebecca said she would change the logo if she could.

o Rob asked what the candidates favorite and least favorite aspects of ASB were

§ Andrew said his favorite thing about ASB was the potential it has to get students who don’t do a lot of stuff to become more involved. His least favorite aspect was not enough student involvement.

§ Rebecca said her favorite aspect of ASB was that it gave her a chance to effect positive changes on campus and the interaction between ASB and the faculty. Her least favorite aspect was lack of involvement and students complaining about problems at the school rather than being proactive and finding solutions.

o This concluded the debate.

o All students will have the opportunity to cast their vote for ASB President next week – details on how to vote will be announced tomorrow or Monday

· The meeting was adjourned

ASB Meeting 3.6.08

ASB Meeting 3/6/08 – Minutes

Back to Cogswell ASB home

· Meeting was called to order By Rebecca Fortelka.

· Andrew discussed retrofitting a MAME station

o The old Neo-Geo box currently residing in Game Club does not work due to the original owner taking several pieces of software and hardware

o Joey has volunteered to set it up as a MAME station, provided ASB pays for the parts to do so – he will not charge ASB for labor

o Cost is estimated between $150-$200

o Tobias and Brody discussed the legality of MAME games – some are legal, some are not

o Andrew stated that the machine would be free for all students to play, and could be installed in either the Student Lounge or the ASB Office

o Tobias also said that since the machine would essentially be a PC it would be able to run student developed games as well

o Brody wanted to know if Joey would be able to maintain the system in the event that it broke, Andrew said he probably would while he is still a student here

o Eric wanted the controllers to be retrofitted from four to six buttons

o Tobias proposed that ASB provide funds up to $200 for the conversion of the Neo Geo into a MAME station

o The motion passed

· Rachael would like to throw a Pancake Party

o She requested $80 in funding from ASB for food and raffle prizes

o She proposed that the event be held on Saturday, March 29th from 7pm-1am in the Student Lounge and ASB Office

o The event would consist of the cooking and consumption of pancakes, watching movies, playing games, and a raffle for gift cards – students who purchase Cogswell pajama pants at the event would receive free raffle tickets

o Marissa motioned to provide up to $80 of ASB funds for the Pancake Party

o The motion passed

· Amy announced that the next Console Game Night will be held on March 28th (Note: this will be changed due to a conflict with Friday Night Live)

o The event will feature a Rock Band tourney, a possible Smash Bros. tourney and a raffle with console games as prizes

· Stephan presented a proposal for on campus student storage that he has submitted to Barb and Andrey

o The proposal covers a number of reasons why students require additional storage space for oversized items such as sculptures

o Eric had concerns about the cost to the school to staff a storage room

o Andrew felt this was an issue better addressed by the Space Planning Committee

o Evan wanted to know how much space would be required – he suggested that if the amount needed is small there may be room within the AV Lab to add a storage area

o Stephan needs student support in order for the Space Planning Committee to review the proposal

o The proposal has been posted along with a petition outside the ASB Office – students interested in adding storage on campus should read over it and sign the petition

o Once the petition is complete it will be submitted to the Space Planning Committee

· Rebecca is going to be sending out a survey to the student body at large

o The survey will address how ASB meetings and the ASB website can be improved to encourage greater student participation

o She also mentioned that there is now space for photos, club info and other club content on the ASB site and that clubs should submit whatever they would like posted to her at rfortelka@cogswell.edu

· Fusion Awards submission forms are available on the ASB website as well as from Andrew in the ASB Office or Rob in the Student Life Office

o Submissions are due by 3/31

· Rob reviewed upcoming election dates

o Forms for all those interested in running for President or Vice President are due by 3/14

o There will be a debate at the ASB meeting on 3/20

o Elections will be held at the ASB meeting on 3/27

· Eric announced the Meet the Makers event scheduled for 4/19

o The event will feature a dozen industry representatives from several different companies including EA, Cryptic, Maxis, etc

o There will be activities throughout the day including panel discussions with Q and A, a portfolio and resume workshop and critiques for animators, modelers and game designers

o The workshops will be sign-up only, contact Eric to sign up, preference will be given to graduating seniors and the rest will be first come first serve

o Breakfast and lunch will be provided

o Eric will continue to update the student body about this event through their Cogswell emails

· Andy announced that all financial aid applications are due to him by 3/15

· Kathy announced that she will be posting quotations from Grace Hopper around the school and that students should keep an eye out for them

· The meeting was adjourned

    • Andrew said he would try to organize a character smash event sometime soon, possibly at lunch time

Minutes from 2/21/08

meeting was called to order By Andrew Jennings.

· Andrew proposed providing incentives for people to volunteer in the ASB Office

o He proposed offering a free sweatshirt each semester and a 25% discount on all office supplies sold out of the office

o Barb pointed out that ASB doesn’t pay for the sweatshirts, Student Life does, but agreed to cover the cost for one sweatshirt for each volunteer, but only once, not every semester

o Tyler recommended that volunteers have their choice between a sweatshirt or another article of clothing

o Tyler made a motion to provide ASB Office volunteers with one free article of clothing when they start and a 25% discount on office supplies sold out of the office for as long as they volunteer

o The motion passed

· Barb reviewed the campus posting policy and the new campus selling policy

o The policies will be included in the Student Handbook next year, and will also be available in the Student Life Office

o The policies are also attached to these minutes

· Tony wanted to discuss ASB funding of murals around the school

o He wasn’t happy with the mural that replaced the purple dragon and asked that students seeking ASB funding for mural projects be required to submit sketches before getting approved

o Andrew pointed out that standard procedure has been for students to submit sketches to ASB as well as the space planning committee

o Tyler did not feel that the mural that was painted matched the one that was originally proposed

o Barb clarified that ASB does not have the authority to decide which murals may or may not be painted around the school

o Andrew agreed but also noted that if ASB does not approve of a mural they should not have to fund it

o Barb asked whether the school needs a different mural approval process

o Andrew preferred that ASB withhold the right not to reimburse for murals which do not match designs submitted when funding was originally requested

· Steve gave us an update on this weekend’s PC Game Night

Thanks to everyone who attended. See you next week J
