o The deadline to submit entries is tomorrow, Friday 4/4/08

o After the deadline has passed Rob will determine whether we have enough submissions to hold the awards show

o They are looking for input and suggestions from Cogswell women

o The purpose of the organization would be to directly address women’s concerns at Cogswell

o They also proposed a calendar of the men of Cogswell to be used as promotional material – they are looking for graphic artists, male models and anyone else who wants to help them with the creation of the calendar

o Space for these will be limited so participants will need to sign up in advance

o To sign up, email Eric at emartin@cogswell.edu – the deadline is Wednesday 4/16/08 no exceptions

o Priority will be given based on class seniority

o There will also be a number of panels and lectures that are not sign up only, and we encourage all students to attend

· Evan updated us on the status of the Dragon’s Den lights

o The first batch of lights have arrived and been installed and another batch is on the way

o To be trained on the use of the lights contact Evan

· Andrew notified us of an upcoming proposal to upgrade the TV Room

· The meeting was adjourned

o The new Executive Board members are Nathan Hiller, Rachel Staley, Amy Mihara, Brody Brooks, Tobiah Marks, Joshua Morello and Anthony Dias

· Reid discussed the upcoming WASC visit next week

o WASC is evaluating how we know how our students are doing

o There will be a meeting for students to give feedback directly to the WASC committee next Thursday, 3/27/08 from 3:45-4:30 – location is still TBA

o The Film Critic’s Club will be viewing Jurassic Park on Monday 3/31/08 at 7:00 in the , and 300 on Tuesday 4/1/08 also in

o There will be a Board Game Night on Thursday 4/3/08 in the Dragon’s Den starting at 7:00

· Fusion Awards were discussed

o So far there have been very few submissions and the student consensus is that many people do not know about the upcoming 3/31/08 submission deadline

o Moving the deadline back was discussed

o Rebecca said that she felt she would have enough time to get submissions onto the website if she received them by Friday at the latest

o It was agreed to move the submission deadline back to Friday 4/4/08

o The idea of emailing recent alumni for submissions was discussed

o Students inquired whether posters could be placed in the front lobby, Rob agreed to ask Barb what the rules were

o We discussed whether copies of masters’ works could be submitted for the 2D Traditional Art category – it was agreed that they could so long as the original work was appropriately credited

o Rachael will look into having the email send an automated confirmation response when it receives a submission

o Rebecca will double check the ASB website to make sure all the forms are available and correct

o We discussed whether someone could enter multiple submissions to the same category if they were both completed by teams – it was agreed that as long as the team leader is different and that the teams were not composed of exactly the same people that teams would not be prevented from submitting if one or more of their members had submitted on a different team

· The meeting was adjourned

     Back to Cogswell ASB Home

ASB Meeting 3/20/08

ASB Meeting 3/20/08 – Minutes

o The Space Planning Committee met on 3/11 to discuss the proposal to create storage space for sculptures and portfolios on campus in response to Stefan’s request. Since we do not know how many students would use this space yet, we will meet again once Stefan’s petition is complete. But we did come up with 5 viable options that should meet students’ needs.

· Rob provided an update on the ASB budget

· Reid discussed the upcoming WASC visit next week

o WASC is evaluating how we know how our students are doing

o There will be a meeting for students to give feedback directly to the WASC committee next Thursday, 3/27/08 from 3:45-4:30 – location is still TBA

o Reid also stated that his official title is “Buntron”

· Rachael announced several upcoming events

o Friday Night Live – Hip Hop Night will be next Friday 3/28/08 in the Dragon’s Den starting at 8:00 – it will feature over 20 separate hip hop artists

o Pancake Party will be next Saturday 3/29/08 in the Student Lounge and ASB Office from 7:00-1:00 – it will feature Barb making pancakes and a raffle

o Console Game Night will be on Saturday 4/5/08 in the Dragon’s Den – it will feature Rock Band and Smash Bros. tournaments

o The first meeting of the Cogswell chapter of the Entertainment Consumer’s Association will be next Wednesday 3/26/08 at lunchtime in Room 193 – the ECA exists to fight censorship of video games and to improve the image of video games in mainstream culture.

· Rob reminded students of the upcoming AICCU art show

o The show is an annual event at the state capitol

o Cogswell will be sending 2-3 student works to represent us at the show

o Students interested in having their work in the show should submit it to Lucy this week

· Fusion Awards submission forms are available on the ASB website as well as from Andrew in the ASB Office or Rob in the Student Life Office

o Submissions are due by 3/31

· The ASB Presidential debate was held between Andrew Jennings and Rebecca Fortelka – Rob Chaitin moderated

o Rachael asked what the candidates had planned for summer

§ Rebecca wanted to inspire greater student involvement, hold a few awesome activities and talk to students about improving the ASB

§ Andrew wanted to go see Ironman, to work with GDC on some of their facilities requests, to convert the TV lounge into a high quality movie screening room and to work with Evan on repainting some of the audio room.

o Tobias asked if the candidates would prefer the ASB budget be spent on a large number of small scale events or a small number of large scale events

§ Rebecca felt that a smaller number of large events was better but added that she would like to see some afternoon events as well as the usual evening ones

§ Andrew agreed that larger events were better and added that he wanted to see more opportunities for clubs to fundraise. He also said that he is in the process of planning a very large event for next year and that, in general, he’d rather see some of the event budget cut back in favor of school improvements

o Rachael asked if either candidate planned to paint over the wall outside room 197

§ Andrew said no

§ Rebecca said no, that painting murals on white walls were the priority

o Tyler asked if the candidates had any plans to replace the job wall

§ Andrew felt this was more of an issue for the Career Office

§ Rebecca had no opinion

o Steve asked how the candidates planned to raise public awareness of Cogswell

§ Rebecca said she would work with the recruitment staff and try to reach out to prospective students. She added that she recently had the opportunity to return to her High School with Barb and participate in recruiting efforts there.

§ Andrew said that it was all students’ responsibility to raise Cogswell’s profile. He went on to say that he currently worked as an ambassador. He said that students should take it upon themselves to talk to people from outside of the Cogswell community about our school and that they should also talk to Barb about websites they frequent or publications they read so that advertising can be better targeted.

o Tobias asked what would each candidate do different than their opponent

§ Rebecca said that this was a very difficult question but that she felt she would be able to expose students to different parts of campus life than they were used to or than were specific to their majors, and that she would promote activities and events.

§ Andrew felt that the biggest campus issue is student involvement and that he would improve this by getting students involved in school improvements. He cited his work on the ASB Office as a successful example of this.

o Steve asked the candidates opinion of Cogswell’s “adult themed” logo, and if they planned to do anything about it

§ Andrew said that while he doesn’t like the logo, it cannot be changed and that he would rather be proactive in designing an ASB logo that could be used for ASB clothing, etc, than to complain about the school logo over which he has no control.

§ Rebecca said she would change the logo if she could.

o Rob asked what the candidates favorite and least favorite aspects of ASB were

§ Andrew said his favorite thing about ASB was the potential it has to get students who don’t do a lot of stuff to become more involved. His least favorite aspect was not enough student involvement.

§ Rebecca said her favorite aspect of ASB was that it gave her a chance to effect positive changes on campus and the interaction between ASB and the faculty. Her least favorite aspect was lack of involvement and students complaining about problems at the school rather than being proactive and finding solutions.

o This concluded the debate.

o All students will have the opportunity to cast their vote for ASB President next week – details on how to vote will be announced tomorrow or Monday

· The meeting was adjourned
     Back To Cogswell ASB

ASB Meeting 3.6.08

ASB Meeting 3/6/08 – Minutes
Back to Cogswell ASB home

· Meeting was called to order By Rebecca Fortelka.

· Andrew discussed retrofitting a MAME station

o The old Neo-Geo box currently residing in Game Club does not work due to the original owner taking several pieces of software and hardware

o Joey has volunteered to set it up as a MAME station, provided ASB pays for the parts to do so – he will not charge ASB for labor

o Cost is estimated between $150-$200

o Tobias and Brody discussed the legality of MAME games – some are legal, some are not

o Andrew stated that the machine would be free for all students to play, and could be installed in either the Student Lounge or the ASB Office

o Tobias also said that since the machine would essentially be a PC it would be able to run student developed games as well

o Brody wanted to know if Joey would be able to maintain the system in the event that it broke, Andrew said he probably would while he is still a student here

o Eric wanted the controllers to be retrofitted from four to six buttons

o Tobias proposed that ASB provide funds up to $200 for the conversion of the Neo Geo into a MAME station

o The motion passed

· Rachael would like to throw a Pancake Party

o She requested $80 in funding from ASB for food and raffle prizes

o She proposed that the event be held on Saturday, March 29th from 7pm-1am in the Student Lounge and ASB Office

o The event would consist of the cooking and consumption of pancakes, watching movies, playing games, and a raffle for gift cards – students who purchase Cogswell pajama pants at the event would receive free raffle tickets

o Marissa motioned to provide up to $80 of ASB funds for the Pancake Party

o The motion passed

· Amy announced that the next Console Game Night will be held on March 28th (Note: this will be changed due to a conflict with Friday Night Live)

o The event will feature a Rock Band tourney, a possible Smash Bros. tourney and a raffle with console games as prizes

· Stephan presented a proposal for on campus student storage that he has submitted to Barb and Andrey

o The proposal covers a number of reasons why students require additional storage space for oversized items such as sculptures

o Eric had concerns about the cost to the school to staff a storage room

o Andrew felt this was an issue better addressed by the Space Planning Committee

o Evan wanted to know how much space would be required – he suggested that if the amount needed is small there may be room within the AV Lab to add a storage area

o Stephan needs student support in order for the Space Planning Committee to review the proposal

o The proposal has been posted along with a petition outside the ASB Office – students interested in adding storage on campus should read over it and sign the petition

o Once the petition is complete it will be submitted to the Space Planning Committee

· Rebecca is going to be sending out a survey to the student body at large

o The survey will address how ASB meetings and the ASB website can be improved to encourage greater student participation

o She also mentioned that there is now space for photos, club info and other club content on the ASB site and that clubs should submit whatever they would like posted to her at rfortelka@cogswell.edu

· Fusion Awards submission forms are available on the ASB website as well as from Andrew in the ASB Office or Rob in the Student Life Office

o Submissions are due by 3/31

· Rob reviewed upcoming election dates

o Forms for all those interested in running for President or Vice President are due by 3/14

o There will be a debate at the ASB meeting on 3/20

o Elections will be held at the ASB meeting on 3/27

· Eric announced the Meet the Makers event scheduled for 4/19

o The event will feature a dozen industry representatives from several different companies including EA, Cryptic, Maxis, etc

o There will be activities throughout the day including panel discussions with Q and A, a portfolio and resume workshop and critiques for animators, modelers and game designers

o The workshops will be sign-up only, contact Eric to sign up, preference will be given to graduating seniors and the rest will be first come first serve

o Breakfast and lunch will be provided

o Eric will continue to update the student body about this event through their Cogswell emails

· Andy announced that all financial aid applications are due to him by 3/15

· Kathy announced that she will be posting quotations from Grace Hopper around the school and that students should keep an eye out for them

· The meeting was adjourned

ASB Minutes for 2/28/08

Go back to Cogswell ASB Home
ASB Meeting 2/28/08 – Minutes

Meeting was called to order By Rebecca Fortelka.

Rebecca announced that the PJ party has officially been cancelled

Rebecca stated the party was cancelled due to lack of interest and lack of a good time to hold it

Barb asked what we planned to do with all the extra pancake mix, etc

Andrew suggested we could plan to have pancakes at lunchtime some day, maybe at an ASB meeting

Rob gave an update on Fusion Awards

Submission forms will be available next week – the submission deadline is 3/31

Rob is looking for more student volunteers to work on the Fusion Awards, specifically in helping Rebecca with the website, handling incoming submissions, contacting faculty about judging and presenting awards, planning decorations for the event and event setup and management and designing a logo for the awards

Josh and Will volunteered to help

Andrew still needs more volunteers for the ASB Office

Rob and Rachael discussed upcoming elections

Currently Rebecca Fortelka is the only candidate for ASB President

Forms for all those interested in running for President or Vice President are NOW due by 3/17

There will be a debate at the ASB meeting on 3/20

Elections will be held at the ASB meeting on 3/27

Andrew talked about the unsuccessful contest to design a mascot for the school

Andrew proposed that instead of a contest we hold a “character smash” where artists could collaborate to build a mascot character – he said that Jeff Jackson would be willing to help moderate such a process

Barb pointed out that our mascot need not be a dragon so long as the student body supports it

Andrew said he would try to organize a character smash event sometime soon, possibly at lunch time

Josh had a budget question about Friday Night Live

The budgeted $80 from the last Friday Night Live was unspent and Josh wanted authorization to use that money for the purchase of DV Tapes to record future events

A motion to that effect was made and passed

Josh announced that the next Friday Night Live will be on 3/28 and will have a hip hop theme – there will be over 15 artists on the bill and Tony will be selling food again

Rebecca wanted to know if a survey of students might be used to find out how better to run ASB meetings and how to get more students to attend them

Brody stated that he believes students that do not attend ASB meeting are not interested in them and would continue to feel that way regardless of what changes might be made

Rachael announced that the Student Life sponsored Ski Trip would be on 3/9

Any interested students need to return waivers to Rob ASAP

Barb announced that there will be a library evaluation taking place on 3/4 and 3/5

There will be a student meeting on 3/5 @ 12:30 for students to give feedback about the library to the evaluating committee

Barb presented Andy’s proposal to do a mural of the nerdy dragon somewhere on campus and asked where it should go

Brody thought it should go on a wall that doesn’t yet have a mural on it, rather than paint over an old one

Andrew suggested the back wall of the Student Lounge behind the foosball table

Several students expressed that ASB wanted the ability to approve or veto mural content

Barb pointed out that this was contrary to what they had said when last this topic was discussed

A motion was made to request that ASB be given approval authority over mural content

The motion passed

Brody reported on Steve’s behalf that PC Game Night was a big success

Over 40 people attended

The raffle made $166 total, $83 of which belongs to ASB

Andrew suggested that for future raffles we could write game companies for free swag or product to raffle off

Tony announced that the Music Producers Club will be meeting every Monday at 5:00 in room 193

The MPD will also be hosting laptop jams every Thursday in the Dragon’s Den from 7-10

Rachael proposed that we start a Silicon Valley chapter of the Entertainment Consumers Association

The group promotes free speech in video games and raises public awareness about the issues of censorship that face the video game industry

For any Cogswell Student to join the fee is $15

The meeting was adjourned

Minutes from 2/21/08

meeting was called to order By Andrew Jennings.
· Andrew proposed providing incentives for people to volunteer in the ASB Office

o He proposed offering a free sweatshirt each semester and a 25% discount on all office supplies sold out of the office

o Barb pointed out that ASB doesn’t pay for the sweatshirts, Student Life does, but agreed to cover the cost for one sweatshirt for each volunteer, but only once, not every semester

o Tyler recommended that volunteers have their choice between a sweatshirt or another article of clothing

o Tyler made a motion to provide ASB Office volunteers with one free article of clothing when they start and a 25% discount on office supplies sold out of the office for as long as they volunteer

o The motion passed

· Barb reviewed the campus posting policy and the new campus selling policy

o The policies will be included in the Student Handbook next year, and will also be available in the Student Life Office

o The policies are also attached to these minutes

· Tony wanted to discuss ASB funding of murals around the school

o He wasn’t happy with the mural that replaced the purple dragon and asked that students seeking ASB funding for mural projects be required to submit sketches before getting approved

o Andrew pointed out that standard procedure has been for students to submit sketches to ASB as well as the space planning committee

o Tyler did not feel that the mural that was painted matched the one that was originally proposed

o Barb clarified that ASB does not have the authority to decide which murals may or may not be painted around the school

o Andrew agreed but also noted that if ASB does not approve of a mural they should not have to fund it

o Barb asked whether the school needs a different mural approval process

o Andrew preferred that ASB withhold the right not to reimburse for murals which do not match designs submitted when funding was originally requested

· Steve gave us an update on this weekend’s PC Game Night

Thanks to everyone who attended. Faculty has gone through 1/3 of them. Can we move the sculptures by the window? Talk to the art department.
• Albert Chen needs some students for a paid job. Work with his friends that made the show Burn Notice (which Barb says is funny). Talk to Albert! achen@cogswell.edu
• Macs in the Shrine have problems printing – Evan Peebles is aware of this and is working on it. They need a certain driver and should be good to go in a week.
• Teachers are losing class time because the copiers keep going down. Chet will talk to the Dean because faculty should be taking care of their class work before class. Any printer issues need to be brought up with Andrey. Also, there are 4 copiers readily available on campus – this shouldn’t be happening.
• Students suggest taking down the Lair exhibit because the game isn’t a good one, though the art is. The exhibit will be down soon – Susan was waiting on high schooler visits.
• Big announcement – DMP DEGREE DISCONTINUED. This is due to the loss of Lexi Leban. Current DMP students will continue to have their classes and will graduate but no new DMP students. DMP classes that are mandatory for students of other disciplines will remain (video editing, compositing, etc.). This is not a cost cutting matter – this is about putting resources into the places that will help Cogswell excel (like hiring full-time faculty members such as Albert and Hadi). Also trying to keep new animation guy Michael on – maybe make him full time. Most schools don’t have a good, full time game design or animation faculty members – we are fortunate! Where DMP video equipment will end up is still being determined.
• Can we get advanced web classes? No, too common/competitive to put resources into. You can take the classes at most CC’s around here.
• Rebecca’s website updates – anyone with suggestions can email her rfortelka@cogswell.edu There is also the Web Design Club which most people are doing through a Google group – again, email her if interested. And she needs some help with the forums – they are simple machine forums.
• ASB OFFICE HOURS – the ASB needs people to work the office on Tuesdays and weekdays before noon. There’s a TV, DVD player and a new awesome stereo in there. You can chill out, hang out and/or do homework. It’s fun! Talk to Andrew if you are interested. ajennings@cogswell.edu
• Andrew is ordering art supplies! Going to cost roughly $200 and is coming out of the ASB budget for that sort of thing. If you have art supply suggestions, email Andrew: ajennings@cogswell.edu
• If you need to get into ASB, talk to Rob just down the hall. We’re still waiting on keys while Marvin is away on vacation.
• ASB t-shirts are ordered and will be here this week or next.
• PRESENT A BROWN BAG LUNCH!!! You can give a 20-30 minute talk on anything – something related to your degree program here or simply your passion in life. We will be picking someone in 2 weeks. The presentation will be in the Spring. Submit a proposal at one of the next 2 ASB meetings. If you have questions, contact Kathy Williams – kwilliams@cogswell.edu
• Studio 15 is doing a Hot Six board game night on Oct. 19th at 6 pm. There will be a company, Table Star Games, there looking for students for internships. Andrew bought Risk – Chet should be happy. Bring your own board games! We’ll have a few but more is always fun.
• ASB BBQ NEEDS TO BE CLEANED. Marissa, Sarah and Amy spent 4 hours cleaning the nasty thing. YOU NEED TO CLEAN THE BBQ AND/OR THE POPCORN MACHINE IF YOU USE IT. The ASB proposed a new rule: if you use the BBQ or the popcorn machine and don’t clean it, you will lose the privilege to use the BBQ & popcorn machine for a whole semester. It passes!! Rob will make a cleaning guide. Hopefully with pictures for those who are more visually inclined.
• Music Producer’s Club is making a CD of CPC student work! Send your .wav or .aiff file to Tony tdias@cogswell.edu They are also having Reason classes starting Oct. 20th and going for 6 classes. On Nov. 8-10, Tony is going to Remix Hotel with other DJs and producers – it’s like a convention and very cool. Wanna go? Talk to Tony.
• Console Game Night is Nov. 17th!!! It’s an overnighter and we will be playing Halo 3 and Guitar Hero 3 among many many others. Bring your games and consoles and let’s do some hard core gaming!!!!!!! (Rachael is very excited about this…..she’s ready to pwn sum n00bs @ halo3). :D
• Japanese Swordsmans Club meets Mondays and Wednesday at 6 pm.
• People would like a place to store their sculptures, giant drawing pads, etc. so they can bike to school. This topic was tabled for later.
• Recycle bins are coming! Paper ones are already there and glass/plastic ones are coming. Recycle bin logo contest is going on now! Make a logo to go on the recycling bins!! Winner wins the 300 DVD. Bring your ideas in to the next ASB meeting! The topic of having Stephan recycling the bottles and cans and taking 75% of the profit has been tabled.
<img width='1' height='1' They’re really awesome talks every 3rd Wednesday of the month at 12:30 pm. Bring your lunch and be inspired! Along with Kathy Williams, ASB wants YOU to be a speaker!! Whatever you are into, be it music, games, cars, collecting foreign stamps, we want to hear about it! Interested?? Email a short description of what you want to give a (roughly 20 min + Q&A) talk on and why you think your talk would be the best to either me or to Rob Chaitin (rchaitin@cogswell.edu). So cool!

n CLUBS MUST RENEW!!! You have 2 weeks from today to get your form in.
- Recycling: tabled because Stephen isn’t here
- 24 hour access petition has been created and is being signed as we speak
o We are looking to get around 100 signatures
o Andrew will then present the proposal to Chet
o If administration does not respond to the petition, there is talk of doing a sit-in
o Will cost school extra money in terms of electricity, but not personnel
 Some rooms have motion-sensor lights, but not all, and we’re not sure if there are plans to get more
 There is currently no auto shutdown for computers either
o Some people are interested in dropping the signature runaround
o Freshmen don’t have extended access
 Some classes like video editing are generally taken by freshmen but require a lot of outside homework that must be done specifically on a Mac in FinalCut which most people don’t have
o Ask hours to be posted on the door
- Halloween Party
o Dan is using the Dragon’s Den until 5 pm
o Write a set-up task list and figure out how many people we need to do it in 3 hours
o In the future… if anyone ever wants to schedule an event in the Dragon’s Den, ask Lucy for a reservation
- Paintball
o It’s happening on Saturday, November 10th
o At Bay Area Paintball in Burlingame
o Still getting exact pricing
- Presidential Elections
o At the ASB All Student Meeting people were interested in electing new officers before the next official election
o Most people at this meeting are interested in this as well
o Some people would prefer to wait because of the timing, and also because Rob and Rachael are more accountable than students
 If the people who run for president aren’t reliable and not many people vote, we can move to refrain from electing officers
- Eric has a proposal…
o Funds request in the amount of $500 for an Xbox 360 and TorqueX
o Allow for small groups to create games for Xbox led by Albert Chen
o Students working on these games would be under direct supervision of Albert Chen
o Goal to make games by 2008
o ASB can be updated on a month-to-month basis on the team’s progress
o This request has been made to administration, but administration does not have the funds to support it
o This a necessary step for students so we can create proof of concepts, funnel our games online, and get Cogswell more recognized in the industry
o Can be helpful to all students – as all disciplines of Cogswell are required in order to make a game (engineering, audio, modeling, animation…)
o Revenue from the games may be an issue because ASB money is created by fees taken from all students, and if only a select few students are making revenue from projects created using software purchased using ASB funds
o Xbox will be kept either in Albert’s office or possibly in the ASB Office
o Eric will talk to Rejino or Chet about the details of Non-Profit
o There will be a vote on this proposal next week and those who feel strongly about it should attend the meeting next week
o UPDATE: Eric has informed me that they have obtained funds for this project from other sources. Therefore ASB will not need to contribute funds for this project to move forward. We can still discuss the project at the next meeting should ASB so desire. ---Rob
- At the top of the agenda for next week’s meeting will be a fund request from the Web Design Club – see Rebecca Fortelka for details.

Go back to Cogswell ASB

ASB Meeting for Oct 11th 07

ASB Meeting 10/11/2007

Website Update

· Email Rebecca (rfortelka@cogswell.edu) with any club info you have (times, meeting place, events, etc.) so she can put it on the website

HALLOWEEN PARTY

· It’s going to be AWESOME!!!!

· Oct. 27th, Saturday, 8 pm – 12 am

· Tons of contests, tons of prizes (good prizes….like $50 for winning the costume contest), food, movies, music

· DRESS UP!!!!!!!!
